Mr. Clement is trying to tell us that the S&T sphere will not actually contribute that much to the economics of the Philippines. Perhaps it is true. Well, it is.
But the S&T sphere is a sphere which is very versatile and is basically connected to a lot of things. Engineering. Architecture. Manufacturing. Well, these things do not seem to keep up with modernization, but these things are essential to society today.
One of my classmates, during our Geometry class, asked Ma’am Yu-hico, our Geometry teacher, this question.
Ma’am, para saan po yung Power Theorems?
We were discussing circles then and some of the theorems were the “Tangent-Secant Power Theorem”, “Two-Tangent Power Theorem” and “Two-Secant Power Theorem”.
While waiting for Ma’am Yu-hico’s answer, I was thinking that those Power Theorems had no use. But immediately, that opinion was changed.
She explained the use of the Power Theorems in engineering and architecture. I do not have to expound more, just think of it this way. Arcs, secants, tangents. All found in bridges, right? Civil engineering!
Perhaps Mr. Clement IS right. It is not the knowledge that matters BUT THE SKILLS. You don’t get to retain every single lesson. Sometimes, you even forget them right after discussions, that’s why you flunk a quiz or long exam. What matters most is the SKILLS you get from those. Those that can be applied in different jobs, no matter how big-paying or how simple they can be.
And that’s the way Pisay scholars can help out in tomorrow’s everyday life.
